An 11th Century city centre castle is going on the market this week...The Devon castle was founded in 1066 by William the Conqueror on top of a volcanic hill.

Read "Historic castle goes up for sale" from BBC News

I wonder how much it'll end up making, and I'm also curious why the Department for Constitutional Affairs decided to sell (or at least if there were any more specific reasons than just needing some extra $). It would be horrible if it got turned into a casino. :madviking:

I had never heard of such a Government Department, so I looked it up on GOOGLE. It seems there is such a Department, but their responsibilities are connected with the Legal system.

Is the BBC having a joke here? (They wouldn't tell us lies-well maybe little white ones about WoMD in Iraq). Surely responsibilty for disposal of Castles would be the job of the National Trust?
They say hard work never hurt anybody, but I figured why take the chance....Ronald Reagan

Interesting question. A couple of years ago I saw a member of the royal family was renting one of their castles out quite cheaply: a mere 250,000 pounds a year! king2.gif

Oh really i wish i had known, i definitly would hav considered it if the place wasnt too draughty....

Yea alright, i dont have that sort of money. But i spose for a castle of the royal family that is quite cheep.
The sick thing is there are people out there with silly money that £250K is nothing to, e.g girlfriend of a girlfriend's fience is a average premiership football player, he takes home £30,000 a week. I looking to start earning that a year!

Ow man if i was a footballer I'd buy a castle to live in!

It's funny when people in my country (the U.S.) build castles out in the countryside. Like that eccentric rich lunatic who built that large medieval castle outside of Lexington, Kentucky, for example. I guess he figured that he would need to defend himself against the state of Kentucky lest another Civil War should take place! tongue.gif

Wow, now that is beautiful!

Its a bit fairytale for my liking, I wouldn't have pointy turrets but definitely would want a moat, but then again who am I to comment, that is a beautiful castle and its not like Ive got one!

It looks massive, bet its spacious inside.... 'sigh' .... I could only imagine what it would be like to host a summer party if you owned it and walking across your own court yard to your quarters...

Hey then again, guess its not so great: you know when you've been out and come home desperate for a tommy and you hurriedly unlock your door to rush up the stairs to go collapse on the loo!? Well imagine you had that castle... hahaha... you'd have to let your self through the gatehouse, then run across the court yard, then let yourself into the inner ward, then over to the inner keep, then probably up a big set of winding stairs along the corridor... Imagine! Or Imagine your on your way out and your half way down your drive... ''oh s**t Ive forgotten my mobile, bugger goin back for that!'' lol

Why would you want to make sure to have a moat?
