Absalon (c.1128-1201)
Born on the Isle of Seeland ,Denmark, Absalon (or Axel), Archbishop of Lund, was a great Danish Statesmen and General during the reigns of Valvemar I (1154-1182) and Canute VI (1182-1202) of Denmark. In 1178 he was appointed archbishop of Lund,and as a minister to King Valvemar I was instrumental in driving off the Wendish pirates from Denmark . Under Canute he helped to overthrow Bogislaw of Pomerania.
A great lover of art and learning Absalon assisted Saxo Grammaticus with the compilation of the history of Denmark.
Amongst Absalon's many achievements was the building a castle which would ultimately provide the nucleus for the city of Copenhagen.
