Abu Bekr (d.634)
Abu Bekr was the father of Mohammed's favourite wife, and would become his first successor. A wealthy citizen of Mecca, he was one of the early believers in the new prophet, and was chosen to accompany him on the flight to Medina.
When Mohammed died, the continuing existance of the new state was seriously threatened by rivalry between the emigrants, the men of Mecca, and the Helpers, those of Medina. But Umar (who was to be the second caliph) did homage to Abu Bekr and all present did likewise.
Abu Bekr's reign lasted only two years, but within that time he saw the supremecy of Islam restored in Arabia, and the beginning of the conquest of Syria and Persia
