Adrian IV (c.1100-1159)
Born Nicholas Breakspear , he was the only English Pope. He was a vigourous defender of papal supremacy in the conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. His bull Laudabiliter authorised King Henry II of England to conquer and to rule Ireland; it was later refuted.
Pope Adrian IV reigned as pope from 1154 to 1159.
