Aetius (d. A.D 454)
Flavius Aetius was a Roman General born in Moesia. He was the son of Gaudentius, the Count of Africa. In his early life he had been held a hostage of the Goths and Huns. This however allowed him to gain a knowledge of the barbarians' ways, which ultimately enabled him to accomplish their defeat.
In 424 he invaded Italy at the head of 60,000 barbarians to support Ioannes who had proclaimed himself Emperor. After Ioannes' defeat Aetius was given supreme command in Gaul.
In 432 he slew Count Boniface in single combat, and thereafter became the most conspicuous figure in the moribund Roman Empire.
In 451 he led the Imperial forces to victory over Attila at Châlons-sur-Marne, but was assasinated three years later by Valentine III, who suspected him of having designs on the Imperial crown
