Aetius of Amida (502-575)
Aetius was born in Amida, Mesopotamia,and became physician to Justinian I at the court of Byzantium. He was the first major Christian physician . His great Tetrabiblian drew heavily on the writings of earlier physicians that might otherwise have been forgotten. Aetius also compiled a treatise on diseases of the eye and an important work on obstetrics and gynaecology. Other works gave descriptions of diphtheria, intestinal worms, aneurysm and cirrhosis of the lung.
