Agricola (1142-1485)

Rudolf Agricola was a Dutch scholar and noted humanist. His real name was Roelof Huysman and he was born near Groningen and educated at Louvain and Paris. Agricola  then went to Ferrara where he attended Theodore Gaza's lectures on the Greek language, whilst at the same time lecturing on the language and literature of Rome.

In 1482 he went to Heidelberg,  where eventually he died, becoming one of the founders of German humanism, although probably less through his works than by his personality. Agricola translated Greek poems into Latin, and wrote a biography of Petrarch.  In his last years he began to learn Hebrew.

In addition to his fame as a scholar Agricola was also an accomplished painter and musician.
