Alcuin (735-804)
Alcuin (d.804) was a reknowned scholar born at York in 735, where he became master of the cathedral school in 778. Alcuin moved to the court of Charlemagne at the latter's request and became the leading figure in the first stage of the Carolingian renaissance. As a theologian Alcuin produced the standard medieval version of the Bible and later became abbot of Tours. He was prominent in arranging Charlemagne's coronation as Emperor of the West in 800 AD.
