Alexander II (1198-1249) Kng of Scotland
Alexander, King of Scots from 1214 was the son of William the Lion. After intervening in the Barons' War in England in 1215 in pursuance of Scottish claims to the three northern counties, he eventually abandoned the claims, by the treaty of York, in return for lands in England. During his reign Alexander successfully asserted royal authority in the remote northern and western regions of his kingdom, and attempted to wrest control of the Western Isles from the King of Norway.
Married twice, his first marriage was to Joan, daughter of King John of England who was childless, and his second wife, Marie, the daughter of a French Baron, Enguerrand III, Lord of Coucy, who bore him a son -Later Alexander III.
Alexander II died during a military campaign in the Western Isles.
