Alexander I the Strong (1077-1124)
Alexander I was the fifth son of Malcolm III, King of Scotland, by his second wife Margaret. He succeeded his brother Edgar, in 1107 and married Sybilla, an illegitimate daughter of King Henry I of England.
For much of his reign he was forced to cede control of much of Scotland to his brother (later King David I). Noted for his piety, he promoted monastic institutions and encouraged religious reforms, whilst at the same time rigourously opposing the attempts by English archbishops attempting to establish authority over the Scottish Church.
Nicknamed 'The Strong' Alexander left no legitimate children, and was suceeded by his brother David I 'The Saint'.
