Alexander Stewart (c.1454-1485)

Alexander Stewart, the 3rd Duke of Albany, was the second son of James II of Scotland .  Alexander was imprisoned by his brother James III, but escaped to France. In 1482 an agreement was reached, at the Treaty of Fotheringhay (10-11 June), with King Edward IV of England that he would be recognised as the King of Scots. Albany agreed to become Edward's vassal in return for English assistance in dethroning his brother. In addition a part of southern Scotland would also be ceded to Edward. An invasion of Scotland followed,  but although many of the Scottish nobles rebelled  against the unpopular James (whom they imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle) the English Army was not equipped to besiege  the castle and so withdrew.  A second invasion in 1484 faired little better, and shortly after Albany made peace with his brother. The Duke then retired to France where he died.
