Alfonso , Kings of Portugal
Name of five Medieval Kings of Portugal
Alfonso I, King of Portugal 1139-1185. Established the independence of Portugal, which until his reign had been a dependency of Leon. Alfonso also led his Armies in many battles against the Moors.
Alfonso II, King of Portugal 1211-1223. Alfonso II was noted for his attempts to weaken the power of the clergy. The result being his excommunication by the Pope. He also established a reformed code of law.
Alfonso III, King of Portugal (1248-1279). Much of his reign was taken up with fighting the Moors, but Alfonso III is also remembered for setting up the Cortes of Leiria (1254) which was the first one to include commoners in Portugal.
Alfonso IV, King of Portugal 1325-1357. Much of his reign was taken up with wars against Castile and the Moors. A Civil War also broke out between Alfonso and his son Pedro as a result of the murder of Inez de Castro (Pedro's wife).
Alfonso V King of Portugal 1438-1481 often called ' Africano' ,because of his invasion into Moorish Territories in Africa and victories at Algiers.
