Alfonso VIII
Alfonso VIII, King of Castile 1158-1214. Led a Christian coalition which broke the power of the Moors. In 1176 he married Eleanor (aka Leonora), a daughter of King Henry II of England.
Born in 1155 the only child of Sancho III his uncle Ferdinand, king of Leon claimed the regency.
Alfonso VIII was the founder of the first Spanish university
He was suceeded by his son Henry I of Castile
