Anastasius (Byzantine Emperors)
Name of two medieval Byzantine Emperors
Anastasius I (430-518)- Anastasius Dicorus became the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I in 491 A.D when he succeeded the Emperor Zeno, whose widow, Ariadne, he married. Whilst he was an energetic and just ruler, his reign was marked by the Isaurian and Persian Wars, and by invasions by Slavs, Huns and Bulgarians.
Anastasius II (reigned 713-716)-Anastasius Artemius became the Emperor in 713. His short reign ended when he was deposed by a mutiny of the Navy, which proclaimed Theodosius III in his place. Anastasius then retired as a monk to Thessalonica, but later led an unsucessful revolt against the Emperor Leo (Theodosius' successor), and was executed as a consequence.
