Anastasius (Popes)
Name of three medieval popes
St Anastasius II (496-498) a rather inept diplomat attempted to mend the schism between Rome and Constantinople that had erupted when Pope Felix III had excommunicated Acasius, the Patriarch of Constantinople, who had been replacing orthodox Bishops in the east with known heretics. Unfortunately all he succeeded in doing was to create a futher schism within Rome.
Centuries later Dante would condemn Anastasius to hell for having shown too much indulgence towards adherents of the schism of Acasius'
Anastasius III (911-913)
Amastasius IV (reigned 1153-1154) sucessfully terminated a long running quarrel, by coming to terms with the Emperor Frederick I, and confirming William Fitzherbert's (St. Williams of York) appointment to the See of York, much to the continuing opposition of the powerful Cistercian order.
