Anselm (c. 1033-1109)
A Benedictine monk and scholar, St. Anselm became abbot of Bec in Normandy in 1078, and succeeded Lanfranc as archbishop of Canterbury in 1093.
In 1096, whilst was in Rome, his property was seized by the King, William Rufus, forcing Anselm to flee into exile. Reinistated on the accession of Henry I in 1100, he was soon in conflict with Henry over the Investiture Contest and was exiled once again. A reconciliation with King Henry allowed him to return in 1107.
St Anselm's feast day is the 21st August.
