Bartolomeo Colleoni (c.1400-1475)
Venetian Condottiere
Bartolomeo was born in Bergamo, and was employed by Venice as a Condottiere (mercenary leader). He was able, shrewd, subtle, and served venice for 25 years as Commander of its land forces. Occasionally he fought against the Republic.
Bartolomeo served under both Carmagnola (d.1432) and Gattamelata in Lombardy.
On his deathbed, Bartolomeo bequeathed much of his wealth and property to Venice.
A statue was erected in Scuola of St.Mark in the Square of SS.Giovanni e Paolo.
