Bernard of Clairvaux

Bernard of Clairvaux (c.1091-1153) was a French saint born in Burgundy. In 1113  he entered a Cistercian house and in 1115 was appointed to be the head of one such house at Clairvaux, where he remained until his death. Bernard wrote a great deal, including hymns. He was very prominent in preaching for the 2nd Crusade, and also in condemning the teaching of Abelard. Bernard was canonised in 1174.
