Bridget of Sweden
The daughter of Birgir Persson, governor of Uppland, St. Bridget of Sweden (c. 1303-1373) was married at 13 and had eight children. From 1341-1343, she and her husband, Ulf Gudmarson, travelled to Compostela on a pilgrimage. Ulf died shortly after their return, and Bridget retired to the Cistercian monastery at Vadstena, where the prior, Pieter Olafsson, recorded her visions and translated them into Latin. When King Magnus II endowed a double monastery at Vad stena in 1346, Bridget established the Brigittine order. Three years later, she travelled to Rome to seek the papal blessing for her order from Pope Clement VI. She remained in Rome, except for a trip to the Holy Land in 1372, the rest of her life. Pope Urban V blessed the Brigittines in 1370. Bridget also worked with St. Catherine of Siena to urge Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy from Avignon to Rome. Pope Boniface IX canonized Bridget in 1391.
