Bruce
Robert Bruce (1274-1329), King of Scotland. After the capture of William Wallace, Bruce became the leader of the scots in the War of Independence. Crowned king in 1306, he kept up a bitter struggle, until the final defeat of Edward II at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Not until 1328 was Scotland finally recognised by the English as an independent kingdom. Bruce died of leprosy and was buried in Dumfermline Abbey. His grandson Robert II, son of Margery Bruce and the high steward, was the first Stewart king.
