Cabot
John Cabot (c.1450-1498) was an Italian explorer. Born in Genoa, in 1486 he settled in England and in 1497 was sent out by King Henry VII to find a sea route to Cathay. Sailing from Bristol the expedition landed at a place that may have been in Southern Labrador, Newfoundland, or Cape Breton Island however they believed that they arrived in Asia.
John Cabot died at sea during a second expedition. His son, Sebastian (1474-1557) went with his father on one or both of his voyages to the New World, and undertook a later voyage (1508-9) in search of a North West passage during which he probably entered Hudson Bay.
