Charlemagne (c. 742-814) The eldest son of King Pepin, Charlemagne succeeded his father as King of all the Franks in 771. Throughout his reign he waged war, successfully against the Saxons, Lombards and Magyars, and less successfully against the Saracens in Spain. He was crowned, in 800 a.d. at Rome, as the first Holy Roman Emperor.
