Charles IV (1294-1328) The last French King of the Capetian dynasty He succeeeded his father, Philip IV in 1322. Something of a despot during his reign Charles imposed onerous duties and increased taxes. He commonly confiscated the estates of those Nobles he disliked, and aided his sister, Isabella, against her husband, King Edward II of England. Charles IV died without a surviving male and was succeded by Philip of Valois.
Charles ( V ) the Wise (1337 - 1380)
King of France (1364 - 80). He was regent during the captivity of his father John II in England from 1356 to 1360, and became king upon John's death. During the Hundred Years' War he reconquered nearly all of France from England between 1369 and 1380, and diminished the power of the medieval mercenary companies in France.
Charles commanded at a distance rather than in the field, a method that had rarely succeeded in the past. He chose an excellent commander in Bertrand du Guesclin, who defeated the rebel Charles of Navarreat cocherel in 1364.
Charles (VI) the Mad (1368-1422) also known as Charles the Well-BelovedKing of France from 1380, succeeding his father Charles V; he was under the regency of his uncles until 1388. He became mentally unstable in 1392, and civil war broke out between the dukes of Orléans and Burgundy. Henry V of England invaded France in 1415, conquering Normandy, and in 1420 forced Charles to sign the Treaty of Troyes recognizing Henry as his successor.
