Cimabue
Giovanni Cimabue (c.1240-1301) was an Italian artist born in Florence. Cimabue is generally considered to have been the last great painter working in the Byzantine tradition and generally pioneered the move towards naturalism with his scenes and figures showing more life-like proportions and shading, as oppposed to the traditional medieval style which appeared relatively flat. He founded the Florentine School , of which Giotto was one of the pupils that he inspired.
