Columbus

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506)  born in Genoa, Columbus was financed by Spain to lead an expedition to find the western route to India. His voyage took him to the West Indies in 1492, thus he has been credited to have been the first European to have discovered the American continent (although modern evidence supportds the view that Norse Vikings had landed in Newfoundland during the Dark ages). Columbus made three further voyages to the Americas. In 1492 he took 1500 men to the West Indies; In 1498 he landed in South America; and in 1503 he explored the coasts of Central America and the West Indies where Spanish settlements had been made.
