Edward the Black Prince

EDWARD THE BLACK PRINCE (1330 - 1376)

Duke of Cornwall (1337); Prince of Aquitaine (1362 - 1372), Royal Lieutenant of Gascony.

Eldest son of King Edward III of England and Philippa of Hainault.

Edward was first blooded at Crecy and was responsible for the capture of the French King, John II. Edward was a successful military leader who won series of victories over French during the Hundred Years War.

Edward is also credited as being the founder Garter Knight (c.1348).

Edward maintained at royal court at Bordeaux in English Gascony.

Edward married the widow Joan Holland, also known as the Fair Maid of Kent, in 1361. She was already was a mother of two children by her Holland husband. Edward was the father of Richard II, who would, on Edward's death, become the heir-presumptive of King Edward III.

Edward campaigned to restore King Pedro to the throne of Castile. The Spanish campaigns were responsbile for ruining his health.

Upon his return to the French battlefield, Edward was victorious at Poitiers (1356). However, his victories undoubtedly made him extremely unpopular with the French nobles who rebelled. In retaliation, Edward massacred those at Limouges (1370).

Edward died in France and was buried at Canterbury.
