Luigi Gonzaga
Aged 60yo, Luigi headed a conspiracy to murder Passarino Bonaccolsi, Lord of Mantua (16/8/1328) and seize control of the city of Mantua. Passarino was also Luigi's brother-in-law.
The following year (1329), Luigi was elected as hereditary Captain-General and Lord of Mantua by the people of the city. And the following year (1330), Luigi was recognised as Imperial Vicar (secular Governor) of the city by the Holy Roman Emperor.
The Gonzaga family would remain in power in Mantua for approximately 300 years.
