Orso (Ipato)
Orso (Ipato)
1st Doge of Venice (726 - 737).
Orso (aka. Ursus from Heraclea) was a Commander of the Byzantine Garrisons in Venice. These Garrisons rebelled against Byzantine rule (726) - whether Orso was one of the ring-leaders of the rebellion is not known. However, Orso was elected and given the title "dux". A few years later, Orso was given the title "Hypatos" or "Consul".
Following Orso's death there was an Interregnum (737 - 742), before Teodato Ipato, son of Orso was elected as Venice's 2nd Doge.
