Roger Bacon C.1214-1294 was a Fransican monk and a reknowned scholar and philosopher  .He was born at Ilchester in Somerset and educated in Oxford and Paris where he lectured for many years.

In 1247 Bacon resigned his lectureship in order to devote himself to experimental sciences. Returning to Oxford in 1251 he met Robert Grosseteste, who would exert a powerful influence on Bacon's interlectual development.

Bacon became a Franciscan monk in 1257 and returned to Paris not long after, where at the invitation of Pope V Clermemt II he produced what can only be described as an encyclopadae of learning Computus Naturalium. This was followed by other works, and in c.1268 he wrote his treatise of alchemy.  After which he returned to Oxford, completing his final work Compedium Studii in 1292.

Bacon did much to foster experimental physics and chemistry, and he made valuable contributions to the science of optics.  He also encouraged the study of ancient languages. 

and was named doctor miribilis. He studied alchemy and languages but is best known for his scientific work- especially in optics. His order condemned and imprisoned him from 1277 to 1291. accused of promoting dangerous demonic ideas, .for his heretical teachings.
