William Marshal
WILLIAM MARSHAL (c.1146 - 1219)
Marshal of England and Earl of Pembroke.
- Guardian of Prince Henry, son of King Henry II of Eleanor of Aquitaine (1170)
- Crusader (1183 - 1187)
- Served under both King Richard I and King John of England
- Attained huge landholdings in Ireland by right of his wife, Isabel de Clare, daughter of Strongbow (1207)
- Guardian of King Henry III during his minority
- Fought against Louis of France (1217)
- Considered to be the penultimate knight

He inherited the earldom through his marriage to Isabel, daughter of Richard de Claire, Earl of Pembroke and Striguil in 1189.
As King John's chief advisor he cpounselled moderation during the crisis over Magna Carta.
He expelled Louis of France from the kingdom in 1217 and restored order after the Barons' War.
