Monasticism

The institution of monastic life during the Middle Ages. Those who live a monastic life (such as monks and nuns) live according to a rule and under religious vows. Seclusion is often associated with monasticism, although monasteries were not necessarily secluded during the Middle Ages. Also called monachism.
