Medieval Glossary

Sergeant

A tenant who was below the rank of a knight and held less than a full knight's fee in land. A sergeant was required to carry the lord's banner in battle or to provide troops in an emergency. Sergeantry did not exist in England, although it was sometimes applied to some of the country's fighting men.
