Medieval Glossary

Villein

A peasant class that was tied to the land and owed manorial lords obligations. Villeins acted as agricultural workers. If a new lord were to take control of a manor, the villeins of a previous lord would remain to work the fields for the new lord. The term 'villein' was often used in England instead of the term 'serf.'
